DFW Airport | Runway 17R-35L Rehabilitation

PROJECT Overview

The Runway 17R-35L Rehabilitation involved pavement and electrical rehabilitation for the runway, taxiways, shoulders, blast pads, and holding pads. It also included relocating and repairing the runway drainage system, upgrading airfield lighting and signage, and enhancing the Runway Status Lights (RWSL) system. Additional tasks included partial demolition of the Runway 35L run-up area, installation of no-taxi islands, and various panel replacements on taxiways.

The project also covered the rehabilitation of the hold pads with electrical updates, slip-lining of reinforced concrete pipes, repairing collapsed soil sites, reconfiguring pipelines, replacing corrugated metal pipes, and mitigating obstructions in the taxiway JS Object-Free Area. Project scope also included installation of a runway weather information system (RWIS), final site grading, and erosion controls were also part of the work.

Austin reopened Runway 17R-35L in a shortened configuration in May 2024 and opened in the full operational configuration on Oct. 11, 2024. Both milestones were completed early.

DFW named this project its 2024 Project of the Year, and named ABR its safest contractor after completing 400,000 manhours without a recordable incident.
