Virgin River Gorge Bridges

This multiple award-winning project for the renovation and replacement of a major steel bridge structure in Northern Arizona included the removal of exterior metal bridge railings, replacing them with cast-in-place railings on ten structures.

The ADOT project required removal of the interior overhangs of twin structures at Bridge #7, erecting new steel plate girders and casting a new deck between the bridges, tying the two structures together to make one single structure. The existing north abutment was post-tensioned as part of the strengthening effort. The project was very technically challenging. Given the location of the bridges, the steel girder lifts had to be completed 125 feet above the Virgin River.
