The Long Center of the Performing Arts
In addition to providing a permanent home for the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Lyric Opera and Ballet Austin, the Long Center will enable many smaller arts organizations and artists to reach their potential and a wider audience. The center features a luminescent, glass-walled grand lobby overlooking downtown Austin. The project involved the demolition of the former Palmer Auditorium leaving only the stage tower, side stages and basement area (which has been converted into a supply air plenum and other support areas).
The two-balcony, 2,400-seat multi-purpose venue will be suitable for the symphony, opera, ballet and Broadway musicals as well as a variety of other musical and theatrical presentations. In addition, the project includes a 250-seat flexible Robbins Theater, and the site has been masterplanned to accommodate a future 700-seat proscenium theater and rehearsal spaces.
