PASADENA, Texas–Twenty summer interns from Austin Industrial’s several Texas locations attended Basic Plus Training at the Houston Area Safety Council on Friday, May 24.
Basic Plus Training provides an in-depth overview of the rules, procedures, and best practices for performing work safely in the construction and maintenance services industry. The course consists of 15 modules that cover several topics including chemical safety, electrical safety, fall protection, and others.
“Basic Plus provides a foundation for a safety mindset for the industry and supports Austin’s core value of safety,” said Sara Jones, Manager of Human Resources at Austin Industrial. “We pride ourselves on Austin’s safety record and that our employee-owners go home safe and in the same condition they came to work.”
Austin Industrial’s internship program offers a variety of opportunities for college students to develop their skills, earn experience, network, and learn from industry leaders. Through additional training, these future construction professionals are also learning the value of safety as an integral career skill.
“The internship provides opportunities for students to learn more about our organization and the importance of safety every day, whether in the office or in the field,” Jones said. “It’s an opportunity to train your mind to be well-rounded so as you grow with Austin, safety is always top of mind, no matter where your setting is.”
Alec Borman is a Computer Science major at the University of Texas in Dallas, and an intern in Austin’s IT department. Though he generally works in an office setting, Borman learned important lessons from the course.
“Basic Plus was a positive learning experience that allowed me to better understand the dangers and risks of industrial work,” Borman said. “It reminded me to always stress safety no matter the position. A job can always be done more safely.”
The internship program at Austin Industrial provides college students with opportunities to build their careers in the construction or maintenance industry. Through Basic Plus Training, interns learn the importance of risk prevention, not only as it applies to their work, but also to Austin’s comprehensive culture of safety.
