Austin opens Loop 303 project for Media Tour

ADOT, Peoria city officials and the media attend a tour of Loop 303

Representatives from the Arizona Department of Transportation showed off the latest Loop 303 construction Friday morning.

Peoria city government officials and members of the media saw the stretch of Loop 303 being built from Happy Valley Parkway north. The road then curves east, under Lake Pleasant Parkway, and connects to I-17 two miles south of the Carefree Highway interchange.

However, the focus on ADOT was on the first phase of construction, which is being handled by Austin Bridge & Road. Doug Nintzel, ADOT media relations director said the plans call for Loop 303 to go underneath Lake Pleasant Parkway. Austin is using a technique called soffit fill, where the underpass pit is filled with dirt and a thin layer of concrete is poured on it. The bridge is then built, and when it is finished, the dirt and concrete is simply removed from beneath it.
