History

Austin Bridge & Road began building bridges in the late 1880s. We started with a focus on transportation and still serve that marketplace today. In 1889, George Austin moved to Dallas as an agent for George E. King Bridge Co. of Iowa. Austin’s brother Frank joined him in 1894. In 1896, George began contracting in Georgia. The company, named Austin Brothers Contractors in 1902, fabricated and installed steel truss bridges across Texas and Georgia as the road system was upgraded from use by horse and wagon to automobiles.

Organizational History
In 1900, Charles R. Moore was hired to manage the Texas construction activities while Frank Austin focused on related steel fabrication. In 1918, Moore purchased the construction activities from Frank Austin and operated as Austin Brothers Bridge Company into the 1920s when “Brothers” was dropped from the name. The company was known as Austin Bridge Company and Associated Companies until 1974 when the holding company, Austin Industries, was formed.

Current Organization
From the 1920s through the early 1990s, Austin Industries formed several companies to serve specific market segments. Austin Bridge Company continued to focus on bridges, and Austin Road Company was formed to construct roads and highways throughout north and central Texas. Additionally, Austin Paving Company was established to support private developers by providing subdivisions in which to build their housing. In 1992, all these companies were combined into one organization focused on transportation infrastructure. Combining people and equipment allowed the companies to realize improved capabilities with a broader range of services and enhanced organizational efficiency. The resulting company is Austin Bridge & Road.
