Austin Industrial Recognized for Safety by ABC
LA PORTE, Texas – Austin Industrial announced today it has received the National Safety Excellence Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Austin Industrial was recognized with an Excellence Award, one of ABC’s most exclusive safety honors awarded annually to the safest merit-shop contractors in the nation.
Austin achieved a 0.25 total recordable incident rate in 2019, while performing 8.9 million work hours. The company considers safety as its most important core value and their safety performance regularly surpasses industry norms for safe-work metrics.
“Austin develops site-specific safety plans before we undertake any work and takes deliberate measures to establish a strong safety culture in the facilities where we work” said Gregory McCoun, vice president of maintenance.
On April 4, Austin celebrated 17 consecutive years of embedded work at American Acryl in Bayport, Texas, without a single OSHA recordable incident. This example in the maintenance field of Austin’s safety success doesn’t happen by accident, said McCoun.
“Every task of every day involves detailed risk assessments and hazard mitigation to ensure that employee-owners focus on preventing incidents. In capital project work, the same standards apply" said Brad Morris, vice president for construction.
The 2019 National Safety Excellence Award winners were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Diamond, Platinum and Gold status in ABC’s STEP Safety Management System. Contractors were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable incident rates, leading indicator use, process and program innovations, and video interviews.
“Associated Builders and Contractors is proud to recognize Austin Industrial for consistently raising the standards of safety in the construction industry,” said 2020 ABC National Chair Tim Keating, owner and president of R.C. Stevens Construction Co., Winter Garden, Florida. “Their dedication to world-class safety performance and commitment to total human health is the gold standard of the merit shop construction industry.”
Austin achieved a STEP Diamond award as a prerequisite to qualify for the national award. According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, the average STEP Diamond company is more than eight times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ average for the entire industry based on their total recordable incident rate.
